Family Background
Vandana comes from a middle-class family. She used to live in Kagan Heri village in Najafgarh, Delhi. Her parents were not much educated and this thing motivated them to make their child well educated. Her family always supported her in her decision.
Vandana’s father Hari Prasad Yadav is a sub-inspector at Delhi Police. Her father was not well educated, he just completed his education till XIIth standard and he got selected as sub-inspector only. His father could not study further because of his family problem. Her father also said, “I saw the difference between an IPS officer and a constable and the situation constantly pushed me to facilitate my children for studies”.
Her mother is a housewife. She also has an elder brother. He is a teacher at a school. Her brother and her father always be an inspiration for her to move to Civil Services. In one of her interviews, she also stated “These two men were her constant inspiration and support to get into the Indian Administrative Services. She was always encouraged by her father and brother to realize her potential”.
On her achievement, her father also said “we belong from a farming background. Vandana has achieved something special which none in our village could ever achieve”.
Apart from her father, her father’s senior deputy commissioner also guided her in her preparation. Harinder Kumar Singh was a mentor for Vandana.

Educational Background
She was a brilliant student since her schools days. As his father always told her the value of education. She was very inspired by her father’s struggle and she wanted to try for civil services to do something for our country.
After completing his schooling she wanted to do engineering. Her basic dream was to pursue engineering and after that working at a top MNCs. But when she was in the third year her interest regarding civil services developed and after that, she made some serious attempt to become an IAS officer.
She completed her engineering from Kurukshetra University. And after that, she got a job at MNC and she was working there when she thought to attempt for CSE. Later on, she left her job and started her preparation for UPSC.
She told a media person that “I developed an interest in the civil services in my third year and appeared in the examination in the fourth year. Surprisingly, I cleared it”.
She was surprised after knowing that she got the 4th rank. She was confident that she will clear the exam but to become a national topper is something which she never dreamt of. When she saw the result she didn’t believe it and she said that “When I heard that the result was announced, I went online to look for the toppers. I was shocked to see my face against rank 4. I thought somebody had hacked the UPSC website and was playing a prank”.

Struggle
She secured a very prestigious rank but to achieve this is not at all easy for her. She had to do a lot of hard work. She was very focused throughout her preparation but this isn’t enough to clear the exam. It is one of the toughest exams in India. It demands a dedication, passion, patience and hard work.
In her first two attempts, she was not able to clear the exam. She left her job and the financial situation of her family was also not that much good. But she never stops doing hard work. She got an offer from Infosys but she rejected her offer letter because at that time her priority was civil services.
She again made her third attempt and this time her hard work taught everyone a lesson that the only thing you need is your hard work and determination. She can see herself among the top 5 rankers and this made everyone proud.

Suggestion for Aspirants
She achieved success in her life. So, she wants to share some suggestion or advice to all the candidates who are preparing for civil services examination.
Always listen to the advice of your seniors or elders as they are speaking from their experience. They have gone through the journey so, sincerely listen to their advice and try not to neglect it which the youth is currently doing.
If you want to achieve success than you have to do hard work, there are no shortcuts to clear the exam.
Utilize the internet in a correct manner. If you are not able to purchase books or go to a coaching institute then use the internet properly. You can prepare by sitting at home.
The most important thing is read a newspaper daily this will help you to know more about current affairs.
According to her, you can prepare on your own for the exams. So, try not to join any coaching institute and waste your energy.
Your aim should be the success. You have to be persistently aimed at your success.
