Akhil Pilani: Rank 22, UPSC CSE 2017
Every year UPSC conducts civil services examination for the recruitment of various civil services like Indian Administrative Services (IAS), Indian Police Services (IPS), and Indian Revenue Services (IRS) etc. The result of UPSC Civil Services Examination was declared in May. This year result came with some interesting stories of toppers.
Anudeep Durishetty an IRS Officer secured 1st rank & becomes the topper of CSE 2017. 2nd rank is secured by Anu Kumari who started her career after her marriage. Sachin Gupta has secured 3rd rank with his dedication & hard work.
Akhil Pilani has secured 22nd rank in CSE 217. So let’s begin with her journey.

Akhil belongs to Ludhiana. He was born & brought up at Ludhiana. He was always interested in going for civil services as he likes to do something for the betterment of our country. He has secured 22nd rank all over India in one of the toughest examinations. He was preparing too hard since 2015 & finally he got what he wants.

He is a married man, so after Anu Kumari the next married topper is Akhil. He made his family proud by achieving the highest level of success according to him. Regarding his marriage, he says “It’s just me and my wife don’t have children. But yes, quite a courage to crack the exam after marriage.”
He is a very dedicated person. He used to study 8- 10 hours a day during the preparation. He gave the best years of his life to the CSE preparation and at the end, he achieved what he dreamt of. Both of his parents were doctors. Unfortunately, he lost his father in 2010. His mother is still a doctor by profession. His mother always motivated him during his preparation. Akhil says “Both my parents are doctors, my mother still is, I lost my father in 2010.”

Educational Qualification
Akhil had completed his schooling from Sacred Heart Senior secondary School BRS Nagar. He had opted science in his 11th standard & later on he chooses to go for engineering. He had completed his B. Tech from Netaji Subhas Institute of Engineering at Delhi. After completing his graduation he immediately got a job. He was working with Samsung for the past four years. During his job, he decided to go for his passion rather than continuing the job.
When a media person asked him what if he didn’t get selected and he said: “I was working with Samsung for close to four years before I got enamored with civil services.” He had a backup during his preparation. So that if one thing doesn’t go well he can stay with the second one.

No. of Attempts
It was his dream to become an IAS officer but he started his journey towards his dream in 2015. He started the preparation for civil services exam in 2015. He first attempted the civil services examination in 2016. At that time, he lacks in guidance as compared to the second attempt. But still, in 2016, he got recruited in Indian Informative Service (IIS).
Regarding his preparation, he said, “This is a very prestigious exam and it was always on my mind, I started to prepare for the exam in October 2015.” He further added, “Review and practice are the only things that they helped pass the exam, the exam itself is a motivation because you have the opportunity to work locally and contribute to society.”

Akhil used to take coaching for the preparation of civil services examination. He used to go to Shri Ram Institute for the preparation of general studies. He also joined Vajiram Institute for some elective subjects in Delhi.
He chooses sociology as his optional subject. As he comes from IT background but he chooses a different subject for the CSE optional. Then he had to put a lot of efforts in the sociology preparation. “I had Sociology in the Mains and used to put in a reasonable amount of time as far as studies are concerned,” he said.

Akhil Pilani Marks
His rank is 22nd & he has secured 53.28% in the civil services mains examination. He has got 1079 marks out of 2025. His marks are given below:

So this year CSE results proved that married people too can start their career & achieve their dreams. All the married toppers from Anu Kumari who is a mother of a 2-year-old child secured 2nd rank to Akhil Pilani who has secured 22nd rank breaks the myth of the society. Juhi Jalota another married woman cleared the UPSC Civil Services Examination 2017 & made her family proud. Juhi has secured 122nd rank in UPSC civil services examination.
